Oral Presentations Panel (50 mins)
Presentations:
1. Simulations, simulators & Zoom! - Discuss feasibility, utility, strengths and weaknesses from our experience with delivery of medical simulation remotely using online (free) simulator software (vital signs monitor, ventilator simulator, etc.). Presenter: Safdar Ansari
2. The use of a class Twitter account to stimulate engagement using trivia questions - In this session we will discuss the strategy that we applied in MS2024 Host and Defense to make up for the lack of daily student-instructor interaction as a result of remote learning. We chose to engage students using Twitter and created a course-specific Twitter account. We had 50 people, mostly students, but some faculty, follow the account. We used the automation capabilities of Twitter to release a course-related trivia question Monday through Friday for the duration of the course, with the answer released the day after the question was posed. We understood that this approach did not reach the entire class, so we also embedded every Tweet in Canvas during our daily announcement. The profile averaged over 2000 visits a month, and the Tweets were seen by users an average of 10,000 times a month. We promoted the account by promising prizes for the students with most engagement, and during the last week of the course, we awarded three prizes. Presenters: Adrienne Carey and Karen Eilbeck
3. Taking a scholarly approach to education - This session will discuss the distinction between taking a scholarly approach to education and producing educational scholarship. We will discuss Glassick's criteria for scholarship as well as Boyer's 4 types of scholarship and provide examples of each. Presenters: Jorie Colbert-Getz, Candace Chow, and Kerri Shaffer
4. Better than broccoli: Turning Health Systems Science Education into a fun and healthy treat. Presenter: Damian Borbolla

Psychological Safety: It's Not Just for Snowflakes (80 mins)
Psychological safety is a critical part of optimizing the learning environment. For learning to occur, students must feel safe to take risks and make mistakes. If they feel that they will be punished, humiliated or unfairly remediated for making mistakes, this can lead to burnout, depression, lack of empathy, and decreased educational satisfaction. The goal of this workshop is to help attendees address the importance of psychological safety in their various learning environments in a systematic way. The workshop will start with an ice breaker designed to engage the participants and start building psychological safety within the group. We will have the group define the important factors that contribute to psychological safety and create our own ground rules for the workshop. Next, using an interactive and anonymous tool (Poll Everywhere), we will have the participants take the Psychological Safety Survey. We will also identify common obstacles to psychological safety using the interactive tool and discuss other assessments for psychological safety that participants can utilize to assess their own learning environments. We will then have interactive breakout sessions where we will use case scenarios experienced by various students in different settings where there was there was not psychological safety. The small groups will reenact the scenarios using the tenants of psychological safety and process the differences. Large group discussion will focus on the experiences of the participants. There will be a brief presentation of practical strategies to strengthen psychological safety in various learning environments. We will have the participants make a commitment to themselves to trial one of the strategies. Then we will conclude with a review of the importance of psychological safety, obstacles to it and commitments to assess it and intervene when necessary.

Feedback: More feeding, less evaluating (50 mins)
I will present a pragmatic distinction between the concepts of "feedback" and "evaluation" which are frequently confounded to the detriment of learners.
